Each-Way vs Win Betting
An each-way bet is normally two bets of equal stake: one on the horse to win and one on it to place under the stated terms.
The two components
If you stake £5 each way, the total stake is £10: £5 win plus £5 place. The place portion is settled using a fraction of the win odds and the bookmaker's stated number of places. Terms vary by race and offer.
Why terms matter
Two bookmakers showing the same win price can offer different each-way value if their place fractions or number of places differ. Always check the exact terms before betting rather than assuming “each way” is a standard product.
Each-way is not automatically safer
The place component creates another route to a return, but the total stake is also doubled relative to the same nominal unit on a win-only bet. Whether it is attractive depends on price, place terms and your assessment of the horse's chances.
