Implied Probability Explained
The maths is straightforward; estimating probabilities reliably is the difficult part.
Odds and probability
Decimal odds can be converted to an implied probability by dividing 1 by the decimal price. Fractional odds can first be converted to decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator and adding 1. Market prices also incorporate bookmaker margin, so implied probabilities across all runners can sum to more than 100%.
Stakes do not create an edge
Changing stake size changes the amount at risk, not the underlying quality of a bet. Progressive staking designed to recover losses can rapidly increase exposure. A conservative approach uses predetermined limits and accepts that losses are part of gambling.
Keep gambling money separate
Set a fixed amount you can afford to lose and never use money required for bills, debt payments or essentials. Do not chase losses. If gambling stops being recreational, stop and seek appropriate support.
