Are Favourites Good Value?
Value is about the relationship between price and probability—not whether a horse is popular or whether one bet wins.
Price before outcome
Odds imply a probability. A value-betting decision asks whether your reasonable estimate of the chance is higher than the chance implied by the available price, after accounting for uncertainty and the bookmaker's margin. That estimate can be wrong.
Favourite does not mean value
A favourite is simply the shortest-priced runner in the market at that point. It can be fairly priced, overpriced or underpriced. The same is true of an outsider. A blanket rule to always back or always oppose favourites replaces analysis with a label.
Variance matters
Even a genuinely positive expectation can experience losing sequences. Conversely, short-term profit does not prove an edge. Use records large enough to be informative and avoid increasing stakes to recover losses.
